Thoughts from the Founder

Welcome to the beginning of creating a new standard in workplace wellness and professional culture.

Six years ago, I thought I had done everything ‘right’.  Everything I ‘should’ do.

No matter what I came from or the color of my skin, I had made it.  A full scholarship to a great school, a great job at ExxonMobil, exciting career potential, and more.  There was something missing.  I was living the ‘grind’.  Long nights to prove my worth and commitment, posturing, doing the right things with the right effort at the right time for the right people.

It’s an art.  Navigating corporate America.  Powering through stress and imbalance to finally, triumphantly enter the weekend.  Time to escape, numb, compartmentalize work and life.  Then reenter the cycle.  Rinse and repeat.

I thought, this can’t be it.  There’s got to be another way.  A way to feel purposeful in our work, form real connections, foster creativity and innovation, coach young people to learn and trust in themselves, and nonnegotiably stick to core company values in the day to day.

I was into philosophy and self-development work at a young age.  I read books on Bruce Lee, was gifted the “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tole, and handed the Bhagavad Gita as a young teenager to name a few impactful works.  I never lost my childhood curiosity and love for learning.  Fast forward to Houston in 2016, I was looking to expand my community beyond what I brought with me from out of state.  Through community outreach and volunteering, I joined the leadership team of a local start up nonprofit organization.  I found excitement and purpose around being of service to others and my community.

Life continued…

I was dragged to my first yoga class in January 2017.  I was certified and teaching it at ExxonMobil in January 2018.  When I feel something is right to pursue, I’m in, and I mean all in.

Everything I had learned and experienced through life, the nonprofit work, and 500hrs of yoga teacher training, enabled me to make enough of an impact on my students that I was nominated to speak at our company TED-style event, EM Talks.  The heartfelt notes and communications I received from dozens of coworkers I had never met, vulnerably expressing how that 15-minute talk impacted their lives, solidified this venture.

That experience left me no choice other than the pursuit of bringing this work I never knew I needed to so many other professionals that are in a similar place that I was and more.

I finally knew what was missing that whole time.  The human experience.  The support to learn more about myself.  The confidence and vulnerability to show up authentically as I am.  The guidance to discover things for myself and trust in my own decisions.

I was working on so much more, yet my life had never been more balanced.  The development as a leader in the yoga studio, coach and leadership training, and days’ worth of inquiry has been the largest contribution to success in my career and fulfillment in my life, yet they were compartmentalized.  They could not coexist.  That was the issue.

Now the leader, the coach, the yoga teacher, the sales professional, the friend, and the lifelong learner are all one.  All facets of me have been integrated.  I continue to do the consistent work required to remain in balance while building the Humessence platform to bring this work and many other resources to professionals everywhere.

Humessence is the platform for 360-degree wellness and personal development resources for professionals.  We’re bringing the human essence back to modern business.

Keep a look out for more developments and your opportunity to get involved.  You don’t want to be the last company to step up for your people.

Namaste my friends.
